As one of the first US Army Corps of Engineers lakes completed in the Southeast, Allatoona Lake and Dam was created by the Flood Control Act of 1944. Completed in 1950, it also encompasses 25,000 acres of public lands along its shoreline.

It touches Bartow, Cobb and Cherokee counties in north Georgia.

The lake has camping, hiking, fishing, boating, marinas, restaurants and cabins.
