Recreation Abounds

West Point Lake gives the word “recreation” meaning. With its natural setting in a fairly rural part of the state, the lake offers camping, wildlife viewing, fishing and picnicking. People frequently water ski on the lake and it’s known for regional and national fishing tournaments throughout the year.

Highland Marina Resort offers fishing guide services and waterfront cottages all year long. In addition, the marina also has a playground, boar rental fleet and a restaurant.

Various festivals through the year also bring visitors into the area.

LaGrange is home to LaGrange College, one of the country’s first colleges for women, founded in 1831. It is now co-ed.

Callaway Gardens
Callaway Gardens Resort and Preserve is an award-winning, 14,000-acre gardens, resort and preserve nestled in the southernmost foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Pine Mountain. In addition to three types of accommodations, a choice of restaurants and plenty of shopping, guests at this family-friendly getaway enjoy the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, John A. Hoofers Gospel and Bluegrass Barn (www.hoofers.com) hosts gospel and bluegrass concerts every weekend. In addition, the facility, located near LaGrange, has three to four festivals per year, attracting people from around the world to experience the unique sounds of gospel and bluegrass music. An on-site restaurant puts on the feed Southern-style.

Located near Callaway Gardens and the town of Warm Springs, FD Roosevelt State Park is deeply rooted in the historical era of four-time President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Seeking a place for treatment after he was stricken with polio in 1921, Roosevelt traveled to nearby Warm Springs and built his Little White House. Several structures within the park, including the stone swimming pool, were built by Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. The 9000-acre park also has camping, cottages, trails, swimming, hiking, and horseback riding. A new museum, showcasing FDR’s relationship to the people of Pine Mountain Valley and the time he spent there, will open in mid-2004.

Picturesque Pine Mountain in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, captures the charm of a small Southern town. Butts Farm has a covered bridge, grist mill and a petting farm. In addition, Wild Kingdom Safari, a 500-acre park, showcases many species of animals from around the world.
